The Reference Department on the second floor of Central Library in Market Square provides access to a vast amount of information, in a variety of formats. Over 20,000 Books and other print documents, newspapers, magazines, microfilm, maps, local histories, Federal and Provincial documents and more are available. We also provide computer access to selected databases and the Internet as well as staff who can help you navigate and access a wealth of reference sources so that you can find what you’re looking for. NewspapersWe keep paper copies of most New Brunswick newspapers, selected Maritime newspapers, and the Globe and Mail for at least one month. Older issues of many of these newspapers, and many older newspapers dating back to the 18th century are available on microfilm. |

Reference ArchivesThe Reference Archives (RA) Collection, consists of thousands of books, documents, manuscripts and old newspapers. The collection focus is on New Brunswickana, Canadiana, local history material and selected works related to the history of the Atlantic Seaboard region. It reflects the cultural origins, literary tastes and the publishing and reading habits of the region from the founding of Saint John. Most items in the collection are accessible through VISION, the library’s on-line catalogue and are retrieved by Reference Services staff. |

GenealogyWe have extensive print and microfilm resources including Vital Statistics, books on genealogical research, family histories, indexes to newspaper articles and historical scrapbooks. Library staff will be happy to get you started. |

Study SpaceThe Reference Department has 2 study rooms available free of charge for half days or less. They can be reserved by calling 643-7224. There are also 13 study carrels, and table searing for 70. Additional tables and carels are available on the first floor. |

BooksThe Reference Department has over 20,000 books, including standard reference works such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs and atlases. We also have books on just about every topic. |

Microfilm CollectionNew Brunswick Newspapers, NB census records, Death registers and certificates, land petitions, burial permits, probate records and files, Saint John City Directories as well as local history and family scrapbooks make up the library’s microfilm collection. Eight microfilm readers, a reader/printer and a microfiche reader/printer are available for use. |
